Councilmember Deborah Wilder

Council Corner
November 6, 2002
by Councilmember Deborah Wilder

The American Way
Let me start with a huge Thank You to the residents of Dolphin Isle and members of Rotary who put together another Safe Streets for our kids this Halloween. I think some of the residents who decorate up their houses and dress up in costume have as much fun as the trick-or-treaters. It is a lot of work to put on this event. Thank you.

Secondly, by the time this prints, I hope Russ Harter will be Mayor. Russ has served this community for the last seven years. It is only fitting that he complete his last year on the Council as Mayor. He is a man of ultimate courtesy and patience. It is a pleasure to work with him.

Likewise, I have enjoyed working this last year with Rick Wykoff. His thoroughness in reviewing the agenda and the items facing the City, as well as his lifelong working knowledge of all of its departments, make Rick a real pleasure to have on the Council. Not to neglect my other two colleagues on the Council, I think overall, we have had a great year and have worked extremely well together.

By the time this prints, we will have completed the election. I know I will be disappointed in the number of people who chose not to vote. For those of you who studied the issues and made a conscious choice for your candidate or issue, thank you.

Having the right and obligation to vote will always remain a privilege to me. Even as conflict faces our country, I remain grateful to live in a country that allows its citizens the right to speak freely, vote for the person of their choice, run for political office and worship any religion without fear of prosecution.

I am always amazed at the freedoms Americans enjoy and how often we take those liberties for granted. Every election day, not only gives me an opportunity to exercise my franchise to vote, but is a reminder to me of how glad I am to be an American.

As we start into November and the holiday season I ask that we please remember our neighbors, friends and those who might be in need. In more prosperous years, it is easier to give generously over the holiday season. This year there are many in need in our local community. Please consider making your own personal commitment to the community this year, whether it be money, time, service to others, a kind word, a smile or companionship. All are needed and will be gratefully received.

I look forward to another great year on your Council. Please feel free to contact me with your questions and concerns: dwilder@fostercity.org.
