On Saturday, March 5, Foster City hosted for the first time the Special Olympics. There were about 200 participants in the basketball tournament. Both the Peninsula Jewish Community Center and the Brewer Island Elementary School gyms were used for the event. Long time volunteer Bonny Silverman coordinated the event.
This Special Olympic Basketball Tournament has been held in San Mateo for the last few years and we are very pleased that we hosted this event this year. The Lions Club provided refreshments for all participants along with the volunteers. Vice Mayor Linda Koelling donated the use of her school bus from Kids Connection to help transport the kids from PJCC to Brewer Island and back.
Bonny Silverman requested help from members of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee to help out at court side. The Foster City Police Department for years has helped the Special Olympics by raising funds at several fund raising events.
I want to express my appreciation for the continued support we get from the Foster City Lions Club, with special thanks to Linda Scannell who always shows up and helps cook for these large events in which the Lions Clubs participates. Thanks to Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Miller for his efforts in the city-wide coordination.
With some luck we may be able to keep the Special Olympics in Foster City for many years to come.
