I want to start with a big thank you to the Foster City Rotary Club for their ? One Warm Coat? collection this last weekend. Again, this year Foster City residents have been generous in donating coats in good condition to be given to those less fortunate.
Thanks to our high school kids who have been collecting canned food throughout the City for Samaritan House and Second Harvest Food Bank. The need this year is even greater and unfortunately donations are not quite as generous as in past years. If you think about it the next time you go to the store, pick up an extra box of macaroni and cheese, or cereal or a jar of peanut butter and leave it in the collection barrel on your way out. It will all be appreciated.
Last Thursday night I went to the preview of the musical ?Annie? at the Hillbarn Theatre. If you are looking for a great family outing for the holidays, do not miss this production. Congratulations also go to the North Peninsula Jewish Campus for the ?groundbreaking? of their new community center this last Sunday. This center will benefit the entire community allowing membership without regard to religious affiliation and providing additional recreational activities through our Parks and Recreation Department.
Our new Assemblyman, Gene Mullins was also at the groundbreaking. With his taking office just this last week, he gets to hit the ground running with the Governor?s special budget session to deal with the current 6 BILLION (yes that billion with a ?B?) dollar deficit. Gene will be making some tough decisions in the coming months, but I know he will represent us well. He is a man of great integrity who will thoughtfully and deliberately act in the best interests of his district.
As apprehensive as I am as to what the Governor will do given the current budget situation, I am assured that Foster City is in a sound financial position. Prior City Councils, city managers and staff, along with current personnel, have put money in reserves over the years to act as a cushion during lean times. I know the City Council will be watching every dime this year (even more closely than we have in the past), but I have to confess that I am a bit proud of the fact that Foster City is probably in as good a financial shape (if not better) as any city on the peninsula.
Finally, our City Hall is moving to its new location this week. We will be having a community open house after the first of the year, so you can all have a tour of the new facility. I want to wish all of you a great holiday season. I remain grateful for my family, my friends, good health and a great city to live in. Happy Holidays!!!!
