Council Corner

Oh What a Blessing
It’s been a year now since I had some serious health issues. I have recovered and am doing fine. That, however, is not what this article is about. Remembering my illness got me to thinking over the last few months about the blessings I have in my life. Of course, like most people, among my many blessings are the love of my wife and children, the many friends that I am lucky enough to associate with, and my faith. However, one of the blessings that I have not, in the past, given much thought to is how lucky we are to have the City Council we have in Foster City.

And that folks is what this article is about. We have a group of five citizens who are fully committed to working together for the benefit of the citizens and business community. Oh sure, we don’t always agree. I have been on the losing side of several 4-1 or 3-2 votes. I have also been on the winning side. When each of us votes, we always think we vote in the best interest of the community. Sometimes we just see issues in a different light, and that is good.

What also is good and a blessing, is that to the best of my knowledge, no member of the City Council takes disagreement personally. I can’t think of a time when any of us walked away from a meeting not caring for or not respecting the other members of the Council. Oh to be sure, we have had some historic disagreements, but they have never gotten to the point of lack of respect or personal attack.

So fellow citizens, in this day and age of so much political acrimony at all levels of government, oh what a blessing we have in a City Council that works together, without the rancor and dysfunctional governess of some other cities.

To be sure, we do not sit around holding hands and singing “Cumbiya.” We do, however, have a mutual respect and caring for each other and that is a blessing worth counting.
