I have not written a council corner for quite some time and I thought now would be a good time as we head into our budget discussions and land-use considerations for the City-owned 15 acres next to City Hall.
As to the budget I am somewhat disappointed that we were not able to agree on more significant reductions in non-essential services. We continue to spend more than we take in and I have never felt that was a prudent course to follow. At some point in time I hope I will be able to convince my very able colleagues on the council to take a more critical look at non-essential services.
As to the 15 acres next to City Hall, I was very pleased with the turnout and the demeanor of the Tuesday, April 4th, meeting. I think some workable ideas were expressed and there did seem to be an understanding that Foster City government was not being asked to fund education programs that are the responsibility of the High School District. I felt that the idea of exploring the potential for some type of a joint use facility with a charter school on a portion of the site has some merit.
Other uses discussed also seemed interesting; however, I continue to feel no need to rush to judgment on the issue. I am in favor of development that could be satisfied with land leases and not necessarily land sale. It is my hope and belief that whatever decisions the council makes, it will be in the best interest of all Foster City residents.
