July is National Recreation and Parks Month
Recreation and parks are alive and strong in Foster City! Did you know that Foster City has the most park space per capita in all of San Mateo County? The Parks Division currently supports approximately 142 acres of park land, ten acres of medians, and eight miles of levee/pedway.

The Recreation Division provides over 250 classes, adult sport leagues, and a variety of free public events throughout the year including a 4th of July Celebration, Summer Concerts, Community Bike Ride, Halloween Festival, and Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has designated the month of July as Recreation and Parks Month. Recreation facilities and parks across the country annually use July to celebrate the kick off of summer programming as well as a time to pull their communities together to volunteer, get involved in great outdoor physical activities, and advocate for parks and recreation.

Foster City Parks and Recreation is committed to “creating community though people, parks, and programs”. What is community? Community is a sense of belonging, ownership, and common purpose that develops among people who live or work together within a social context.

I can remember several 4th of July Celebrations and Summer Concerts, standing out at the Amphitheater or in the Meadow looking across the crowds of people and thinking what a wonderful place Foster City is to live and work. You can feel the sense of community in Foster City; you see it on the faces of the kids dancing around to live music, you hear it in the energy of the crowds that summer events attract, and you experience it each time you participate in free community events and engage with your neighbors.

So I encourage you to join the City in celebrating National Recreation and Parks Month in July. Kick off your summer right by joining the Foster City Parks and Recreation Department and Foster City Lions Club in enjoying the annual 4th of July Celebration! I guarantee you will light up with a sense of community just as bright as the fireworks above!
