High School Alternate
San Mateo Middle College High School, an alternative education program in the San Mateo Union High School District, is in its sixth year educating students at the College of San Mateo (CSM).

Middle College High School includes up to 30 juniors and 30 seniors. Students are required to take a combination of high school and college classes at CSM. Students work toward completing their high school requirements, while at the same time, earning college credits. Of the 53 students currently in the program, 13 reside in Foster City and have come from Burlingame, San Mateo, Hillsdale and Aragon High Schools.

The students are high potential juniors and seniors who have not lived up to perceived expectations as a high school student. These students are often creative and independent thinkers, artistically talented, sometimes gifted in one area, such as music, art or computers, but generally are not connected to the high school scene. They may have relatively high test scores, but their grades may not reflect this academic potential. The students do not exhibit extreme discipline problems, but demonstrate the potential maturity to cope with the relative freedom of the college environment.

Recent Middle College graduates have attended four-year colleges after completing Middle College, including UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, Reed College, Point Loma Nazarene College, San Francisco State and Chico State. Several other graduates have continued their education at CSM or other community colleges.

Middle College is accepting new students for the Spring 2004 semester. The application deadline is Nov. 5, 2003.
