Councilmember Rick Wykoff

Council Corner
April 18, 2007
by Councilmember Rick Wykoff

Fiscal Responsibility
I am reminded of a council corner I wrote shortly after I was elected to the City Council. It discussed the economic stability of Foster City and my commitment to attempt to maintain that stability by practicing fiscal responsibility. I believe we have fulfilled that commitment and will continue to do so as long as I am a member of the Council.

One member of the City Council cannot establish a policy of fiscal constraint by his or herself. It takes the collective efforts of a majority of the Council to establish a policy. I am hopeful that as we proceed with the review of the 2007-2008 preliminary budget, there will be a collective effort to pursue a responsible fiscal policy. The City is still in a very good financial position but now is not the time to relax the efforts to maintain fiscal responsibility.

Please be assured, I am not a single interest Councilmember. Every decision I make will be based upon my analysis of proposals with the best interest of all our citizens and the business community paramount. My decisions will contain evaluation of needs, desirability, effect on the community, ramifications of the action, both fiscally and physically, and alternatives to the proposal.

Key among my decision-making points is and will continue to be cost effectiveness and improvement of our community. What I am trying to say in my somewhat rambling fashion is I am concerned about all aspects of Foster City and our ability to continue to be a well-balanced, physically safe, financially secure community for all our citizens and business community.
