Finishing Leo Ryan Park
Hats off to Kevin Miller and the Parks and Recreation staff for their beautiful work on Leo Ryan Park. The expansive view of a serene park landscape with a beautiful lagoon backdrop is a perfect example of this community’s commitment to recreational and leisure services.

Ryan Park when finished, in my opinion, will be the envy of any community on the peninsula. It is my wish that residents take advantage of the concerts in the park this summer, the calm areas in which to walk, read, picnic or just look out at the water will provide a welcomed get away from our busy world.

Added to the array of activities are the newly completed Bocce courts situated near the lagoon adjacent to the Recreation Center parking lot. This will prove to be a very popular activity.

The youth and teens of the city also have a stake in the park with the popular Vibe and Skate Park. These facilities have drawn a lot of attention recently. The future plans for the Vibe and skate park stand to complete the vision of this city center park facility very nicely.

During our last Council meeting, the Parks and Recreation Director presented some long range plan scenarios in which some changes will occur with that area of the park. In all of the plans, one of the tennis courts will be transplanted to Edgewater Park. In these same plans, those courts at Edgewater will then be lighted providing a tremendous offering for those of us who entertain the idea of playing tennis in the evenings.

The plans for the Vibe will give our teens a great deal of flexibility in the types of organized activities in which they can participate. The youth, who frequent the Vibe and participate in YAC, find more than just the social aspects of a club environment. They learn life skills and have positive direction from the Recreation staff that are involved.

I look forward to having a more permanent structure for our youth to enjoy and provide the amenities that will draw them to a more positive environment. The idea for a more permanent skate park will highlight that area and finalize the many recreational activities one may participate in at Leo Ryan Park.

Of course this grand plan will take some time and of course, money. We will have to figure out a way to complete this plan. It’s too good to put off into the future. Your comments on this and other issues are welcomed.
