One of the reasons I sought a position on the City Council was to spearhead a movement within this community to get more residents involved in civic matters.
It is so important to be well informed of how your city is functioning, its growth, the decisions that are being made on your behalf, what opportunities are available and how we are planning for the future. The job of a City Council member is benefited by the work done by its advisory committees.
It has been encouraging to see many new residents applying for the various committee vacancies. I know there are many more who would like to take part, but time constraints, family obligations and the like, prohibit them from participating.
I will say that being on these committees gives you an opportunity to keep pace with what goes on in your community. It gives you a sense of being able to make things happen for the city and being instrumental in contributing to the decision making process at it pertains to the committee’s interest.
Since we have been experiencing some vacancies on many of the committees, I suggested to staff and council at our last council meeting that it was time to evaluate the committees, the number of members and the frequency of meetings during the year. I think with a little revamping, more residents will be able to find the time to participate.
I want to publicly express my gratitude for those individuals who continuously devote time to participate on our committees for the benefit of this community. I am enjoying working with those committees to which I have been assigned.
I’d like to hear from you regarding this subject. Let’s get more residents involved. Give me your opinion about revamping in order to get more interest. Contact me at lkoelling@fostercity.org.
