On March 4th the City of Foster City City Council voted unanimously to support the ?Project? in the draft EIR which would demolish the existing building and build a new San Mateo High School. With this scenario the school will receive almost $12 million from the State. The Project will also bring 40,000 additional square feet to the school. There are a total of 13 alternatives listed and the ?Project? is best for the safety and learning environment for our kids.
I had requested that this resolution be brought to the city council for approval and it was adopted unanimously.
I have sent out a letter to all the city mayors to look at our resolution to see if they would also adopt a resolution like we did. The public has shown overwhelming support of the demolition and building of a new building.
I recently attended a sports banquet for youth sports at San Mateo High School and the question was put fourth ?do you want the old building torn down and a new building be built in its place.? 99% of the over 300 adults raised their hands in support.
The lawsuit that was filed to save San Mateo High School is costing the SMUHSD hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend. This small group of people is even trying to stop any help from the state. That could cost the district (our kids) almost $12 million. The overwhelming majority of the residents and students want this school rebuilt, but that doesn?t matter to this group. It seems that these people are putting an unsafe brick and mortar building ahead of the safety and education of our kids.
Written comments on the draft EIR can be submitted to the School District by the close-of-business 4:30 p.m. on April 5, 2002. Please send comments to:
