The County of San Mateo strives to provide a user-friendly voting experience for all members of the San Mateo County community in all their elections, and the November 5, 2002, general election is no exception.
Due to the data from the Census 2000, the U.S. Department of Justice declared our County is subject to the minority language provisions of the federal voting rights laws. In short, Chinese and Spanish population levels now require us to make all election materials and human assistance available in English, Chinese, and Spanish, beginning with the November 5 election.
The County has identified about 250 voting precincts where local populations will require bilingual poll workers and interpreters. The County now faces the task of recruiting and training these workers.
For those who are interested in working at the polls, polls open at 7:00 am and close at 8:00 pm. Poll workers normally work at the polls from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm. Pay ranges from $80 for judges (those assisting on a precinct board or interpreting) to $100 for inspectors (those in charge of a polling place). Polling place service does not pay much and entails a long, challenging day, but it is exceptionally rewarding. What better community service than supporting efficient and accurate elections?
