Mayor Ron Cox

Council Corner
July 31, 2002
by Mayor Ron Cox

Bits and Pieces
At our last City Council meeting, we approved the North Peninsula Jewish Center (NPJC) lease agreement. This is the final lease agreement that will allow the permits to be issued for construction of the permanent buildings that will be a part of the NPJC project. This project, which is part of the City?s Master Plan, took several years to get to this point. The City and the NPJC are pleased and excited to see the ground breaking of this project.

Lagoon Dredging
Finally, all but one permit has been issued for the lagoon dredging. Three permits had to be issued before the final permit can be issued. Each permit was very similar in that process. It turns out to be a very complex, expensive, and a time consuming process.
The City Council has approved the bidding process to start and we will have a bid opening sometime in August and approval to start construction in September. The first construction will be building a retaining pond at Sea Cloud Park II in the existing basin and dredging will begin perhaps by January 2003 or no later than April/May 2003.

City Hall
Our new City Hall is starting to look great. The question I receive most about the new city hall is the new clock tower that is not completed and looks like a large lighting rod. This tower is not a flagpole either. When the clock tower is completed, we hope it will help accent the beauty of the new city hall.

Leo Ryan Park
I got a chance to see the new boardwalk at Leo Ryan Park and it is down right beautiful. I think the public is in for a great surprise when phase I of Leo Ryan Park renovation is complete. The new boardwalk cost a little extra money, but when you see it you will understand why. The wood used in this is from Australia and is called Iron Wood. It is supposed to last 50 years next to salt water. Our grandchildren can worry about the next boardwalk that has to be replaced.
