Art and Music in Foster City
Have you noticed that with the construction of our new city buildings, the shape of our community campus is becoming evident? I see this as another enhancement of our quality of life. And you know, the cultural activities in our city are a significant part of this quality of life. Everyone is well aware of our Arts & Wine Festival, our Concerts in the Park and of course, the Hillbarn Theater. But there is another program that can provide you a ?nice evening of enrichment.?

Jennie Floyd, one of the leaders on our Arts & Culture Committee and a very accomplished musician in her own right has contributed the following article describing our monthly artist?s receptions.

?When I first moved to Foster City six years ago from the New York City area, my husband and I were looking for a place to have coffee and dessert and listen to a little jazz. It was a Friday night, around 9 p.m. After about 30 minutes of searching, we gave up on our quest ? there was just no live music to be found. In fact, the only open restaurants were Carrow?s, McDonald?s, and Taco Bell.

We still have a way to go in Foster City before we rival the Big Apple in live music or restaurants. But lately, there are some new additions on the entertainment scene that many residents may not be aware of.

For one thing, the Foster City Arts and Culture Committee has been offering free Artist Receptions on a monthly basis for years now. The Art Gallery, located in the foyer of the William Walker Recreation Center at 650 Shell Boulevard, offers a lovely setting to view works of various talented local artists, overlooking our beautiful lagoon. In addition, the receptions feature live music by Peninsula-based musicians, running the gamut from folk to pop to R&B to jazz. These groups play from 7 to 9 p.m. Complimentary wine, sodas, and hors d?oeuvres are also served, and for a free evening out, you can?t beat it. It?s a great way to meet your neighbors and relax without ever having to leave our lovely city. And the traffic beats New York any day!

Upcoming artist receptions will be held on May 10, July 26, August 9, September 20, November 15, and December 20. Won?t you please join us for these elegant evenings of art and music?
