Opticom Signal Control

There are twenty-two (22) signalized intersections in Foster City. Opticom priority control systems are scheduled to be installed on all intersections by June 2002.

The Opticom system provides traffic signal intersection control for emergency response by allowing emergency vehicles temporary command over signalized intersections to create a natural-appearing change of right of way. This enables the fire apparatus to reach the emergency scene more quickly and safely as it controls the traffic flow without disrupting traffic patterns.

Activated by an emitter on the emergency vehicle that sends a high-energy optical (line of sight) signal to a detector mounted on the traffic signal, an electronic processor in the intersection equipment cabinet validates that the vehicle is authorized to utilize the signal and requests a green light from the traffic signal controller.
