| Police Captain |

| DEFINITION: |
| Under the direction of the Chief of Police, supervises the operation, personnel and equipment of either the Field Operations or Administrative Divisions and directs subordinate unit supervisors; will assume command of the Police Department when assigned. |
|
| DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS: |
| This is an exempt full-time position in the Management Employee group. |
|
| IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES: |
| The Police Captain is responsible for the supervision, training and discipline of either the Field Operations or Administrative Division; assists in establishing Department rules, regulations, policies and procedures; prepares duty rosters; prepares graphs, charts and surveys for improvement of beat plans, personnel distribution, and crime patterns; order and maintains supplies; prepares budget estimates and control budget expenditures; is responsible for vehicles and equipment; evaluates employee performance and takes or recommends appropriate disciplinary action; and, assumes command of the Department when assigned. |

| Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: |

| Ability to: Establish goals and objectives for a Police Division, development plans and adjustment plans and organization within delegated authority; plan, organize and assign schedules for staff to provide require service; develop and present ideas and recommendations orally and in writing; operate and supervise operation of equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with applicable laws. |

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be: |

| Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college. |
|
| Experience: Six years of increasingly responsible experience with a California law enforcement agency, including at least three years in a supervisory capacity and currently holding the rank of Lieutenant or above. |
|
| LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION: |
|
| Certificates: Possession of a POST Advanced Certificate is required. Possession of a POST Management Certificate is desirable. |
|
| Registration: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required. |
